Adapting to climate change through drought-resistant agriculture in Cambodia

Longer dry seasons & lower than average/erratic rainfall are feeding drought conditions in Cambodia. The impacts are serious for subsistence farmers, whose livlelihoods and food security depend on consistent rainfall. 

In 2004, 480,000+ ha. crops were destroyed due to drought; in 2018, drought affected 52,000+ people and 96,929 ha. Such events can be exacerbated by the El Nino Soutehrn Oscillation. 

The development of therapeutics for the treatment of Chagas disease and Leishmaniasis

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a diverse group of infectious diseases that affect more than one billion people in 149 countries with millions of others at risk. The official list of NTDs prepared by the World Health Organization (WHO) currently consists of 17 infectious diseases that prevail in tropical and subtropical conditions.

Law’s Dynamic Effects: The Case of South Africa

This project investigates the implementation and operation of the National Minimum Wage Act, 9 of 2018 through a qualitative small-scale study of the domestic work and garment sectors in South Africa. The broad research aims are to understand how labour laws apply in informal workplace settings (or spaces where labour law does not commonly operate), and the processes and strategies used by workers and other relevant stakeholders in achieving improved working conditions.

Development of copper-dependent antimicrobial resistance breakers

Antibiotics are life savers in the field of bacterial infectious diseases. However, several bacterial species are developing resistance against antibiotics, rendering an increasing threat to today’s clinical settings and public health. Beta-lactam antibiotics are one of the most prescribed drugs for treating a variety of bacterial infections. Bacteria produces beta-lactamase enzymes in order to inhibit beta-lactam antibiotics.

CounterMEASURE Project looks for origins of plastic pollution in the Mekong and Ganges rivers

Plastic pollution is a major problem all across Asia.

UNEP and partners have been working through the CounterMEASURE project to determine the sources of plastic pollution in the Mekong and Ganges rivers using a novel combination of technologies, including drones, GIS and machine learning. With this information, we are able to recommend measures that can be taken to beat plastic pollution.
