In 2015, the United Nations launched the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and corresponding SDGs. To support this programme a Global Indicator Framework was adopted by the United Nations Statistical Commission in March 2017 and subsequently by the UN General Assembly in July 2017. That framework comprises 232 statistical indicators designed to measure the 17 goals and their respective 169 targets.
This project investigates the implementation and operation of the National Minimum Wage Act, 9 of 2018 through a qualitative small-scale study of the domestic work and garment sectors in South Africa. The broad research aims are to understand how labour laws apply in informal workplace settings (or spaces where labour law does not commonly operate), and the processes and strategies used by workers and other relevant stakeholders in achieving improved working conditions.

In 2015, when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and the 2030 Agenda, it did so in a resolution entitled “Transforming our World”. The resolution reflected the depth and breadth of the ambitions that were encapsulated in the agenda. Governments went further in the Preamble to the resolution by declaring that they were “determined to take the bold and transformative steps which are urgently needed to shift the world onto a sustainable and resilient path.”
Costa Rica has made many efforts to monitor and conserve its forests. Since 2015, the Government has been developing a national system for monitoring land cover, land use and ecosystems (SIMOCUTE: Sistema Nacional de Monitoreo de la Cobertura y Uso de la Tierra y Ecosistemas) that facilitates the collection, integration, management, and dissemination of national-scale environmental data and information.
In 2020, the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights (UNWG), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), International Labour Organisation (ILO), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) have joined forces to provide further stimulus to the responsible business and human rights discourse in Asia and the Pacific.
National economies have grown substantially since the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century yet people have not necessarily seen an increase in opportunities to find decent work or earn a decent income. In fact, in some places, the increased productivity and rising profits associated with automation have directly impacted the availability of decent jobs. According to the International Labour Organization, more than 204 million people were unemployed in 2015, and more than 600 million new jobs are needed by 2030 just to keep pace with the growth of the working-age population.
