SDG12 Responsible Consumption and Production

RICE

While RICE continues to invest in its core strengths of genetic improvement and natural resources management, it will expand its scope to cover rice value chains from producer to consumer and diversified farming systems.

MISSION:To develop and implement a ‘ZED’ culture in India based on the principles of: Zero Defect (focus on customer) Zero non-conformance/non-compliance Zero waste Zero Effect (focus on society) Zero air pollution/liquid discharge (ZLD)/solid waste Zero wastage of natural resources.

The Role of Sustainability-oriented Social Enterprises in Boosting Green Livelihoods and Business Opportunities in Rural Contexts

The GREEN-WIN project reviewed various cases of capacity building and knowledge improvement of rural livelihood in rural communities related to sustainable and low-carbon solutions. The cases described below were carried out by the social enterprise Development Alternatives Group, comprised of the Society for Technology and Action for Rural Advancement (TARA), Society for Development Alternatives (DA), and their affiliates.

Paper Ranger: Creating Notebooks Using Waste Paper for Disadvantaged Children

In 2007, a group of university students became increasingly aware of the excessive amount of photocopy paper wasted by people using only one side of the paper. To reduce this waste, they developed a way to efficiently use both sides of the sheets by turning them into perfectly usable notebooks. In the beginning, these notebooks were only used by the group of students themselves, but it soon became clear that their production exceeded their need. So, they decided to use them for a good cause.

Circular Economy: An Introduction

Our global society is not sustainable. We all know about the challenges we’re facing: waste, climate change, resource scarcity, loss of biodiversity. At the same time, we want to sustain our economies and offer opportunities for a growing world population. This course is about providing solutions we really believe in: a Circular Economy.

In this course we explore the Circular Economy: how businesses can create value by reusing and recycling products, how designers can come up with amazingly clever solutions, and how you can contribute to make the Circular Economy happen.

CLOSING THE LOOP: Unlocking the informal economy in an inclusive circular economy approach

Over half of global land-based plastic waste leakage into the ocean originates in just five Asian countries. Yet, the
contribution of informal waste management to reducing pollution, remains largely overlooked. The United
Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is gathering evidence in pilot cities in
Asia to identify opportunities to return plastic resources into the production cycle by linking informal and formal
waste processes.

The Maldives: Leveraging Public Budgets for Coastal Adaptation Projects

The Maldives, an atoll island chain consisting of 1,192 islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean, are at high risk from rising sea-levels with a maximum elevation of 2.4m above mean sea-level. More than 44 per cent of settlements and 70 per cent of all critical infrastructure are located within 100 meters of shoreline, which makes them highly vulnerable to flooding and coastal erosion. Climate change induced sea-level rise will increase extreme levels due to storm surges and swell waves, exposing islands population, infrastructure and livelihood assets to increasing flood risk.
