SDG7 Affordable and Clean Energy
According to the World Health Organization, each year an estimated 7 million premature deaths – or 1 in every 9 – are attributed to the joint effects of household and outdoor air pollution. In addition to the impacts on human health, some air pollutants affect ecosystems, threaten food and water security and contribute to climate change. Air pollution is a pressing sustainability concern specified in Sustainable Development Goals 3 (good health and well-being), 7 (clean energy), 11 (sustainable cities), 12 (sustainable consumption and production) and 13 (climate action).
The cost of electricity generated from renewable energy sources can be conceptually split into cost of electricity generation equivalent to that from conventional energy sources and the cost for environmental attributes.
Climate change, ocean pollution, and disasters from natural hazards have also placed a heavy burden, especially on the poor and vulnerable. Further, these challenges are magnified by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic that has become a global emergency in 2020, requiring forceful action at the national, regional, and international levels. Although it remains uncertain when the COVID-19 pandemic will end, economic and social impacts on the region will be significant.
Indonesia case studies in LANDMARC and TIPPING+ project will focus on the scientific assessment of decarbonisation processes through biogas and compost, and policy engagement to enable clean-energy transition in coal- and carbon-intensive regions like Indonesia.
Two funded projects by the European Commission (LANDMARC and TIPPING+) were officially started.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Stockholm University and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) are proud to present the Gordon Goodman Memorial Lecture 2020, which will be delivered on 2 September by Professor Joyeeta Gupta.
