Inequality of Opportunity in Asia and the Pacific: Water and Sanitation

The fifth in the series of Inequality of Opportunity in Asia and the Pacific policy papers (following Education, Decent Work, Clean Energy and Children’s Nutrition) , this paper highlights why it is important to reduce inequalities in access to clean water and basic sanitation. Addressing gender and climate change adaptation in Viet Nam’s agriculture sectors

According to the global climate risk index, Viet Nam is one of the ten nations most vulnerable to climate change impacts. Typhoons and other extreme weather events are increasing.

Another impact is sea level rise, which is leading to saline intrusion, destroying rice fields and other crops.

Women farmers now form the majority of agricultural workers in the province because men are migrating to cities to work.

Addressing Gender in Climate Change Policies for Agriculture

Men and women often have different roles and responsibilities in society and therefore experience climate change impacts in different ways. This video shows what Viet Nam, Uganda and Colombia are doing to develop gender-responsive national adaptation plans for the agriculture sectors. This country-driven work is carried out under a global programme known as Integrating Agriculture in National Adaptation Plans (NAP-Ag), jointly coordinated by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Integrating agriculture in national adaptation plans

The agriculture sectors are the most vulnerable to climate change and climate variability. Through a programme known as Integrating Agriculture in National Adaptation plans (NAP-Ag), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) are supporting eleven countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America to plan for adaptation in the agriculture sectors.

RICE

While RICE continues to invest in its core strengths of genetic improvement and natural resources management, it will expand its scope to cover rice value chains from producer to consumer and diversified farming systems.

SDG Indicators 2.5.1 and 2.5.2 on Plant and Animal Genetic Resources

This course has been developed to support countries in the analysis and reporting for SDG Indicators 2.5.1 and 2.5.2. These indicators measure the achievement of SDG target 2.5, which focuses on maintaining genetic diversity of seeds, cultivated plants and farmed and domesticated animals and their related wild species. The course illustrates the fundamental concepts upon which the methodology is based.
