SDG13 Climate Action

GLF Biodiversity Digital Conference 2020 - One World, One Health

With global health pandemics and climate change creating a world of unknowns, we still have the power to step up to restore the earth. Join thousands of biodiversity experts, scientists, policymakers, journalists, activists, private sector and Indigenous groups at the Global Landscape Forum (GLF) Biodiversity Digital Conference to learn how the world’s leading organizations are uniting in the wake of COVID-19 to conserve and protect the world’s disappearing biodiversity—from seeds to sea turtles.

Climate Change Science and Negotiations

The time to address climate change is now. The mean surface temperature of the Earth has risen dangerously and spurred devastating impacts – and not just on natural ecosystems worldwide, but on daily human life. We are currently on pace towards a temperature increase of 4°C or more this century, while scientists and policymakers propose targets of just 1-2°C to avoid the total destruction of the planet.

Gender, Climate, and Security

Climate change is now impacting every corner of the globe. In many regions, severe droughts and rising temperatures are leading to food insecurity and loss of livelihoods – threatening to reverse hard-won development gains. In fragile and conflict-affected settings, limited governance, political instability and violence leave communities particularly ill-equipped to cope with a changing climate. This in turn can compound existing tensions and exacerbate the complex emergencies we are witnessing today in the Sahel, the Middle East and Central America.

Mitigation of Climate Change in Agriculture (MICCA) Programme Online Discussion Fora

The MICCA Programme organises learning events and webinars through ten discussion fora. All practitioners are welcome to join online discussions looking at climate change and agriculture from different perspectives. You too can participate in upcoming events by joining one or more of the fora. The MICCA Programme started to facilitate online communities in 2012. The communities host over 6,300 individual members from different stakeholder groups in over 120 countries.

Climate change, ocean pollution, and disasters from natural hazards have also placed a heavy burden, especially on the poor and vulnerable. Further, these challenges are magnified by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic that has become a global emergency in 2020, requiring forceful action at the national, regional, and international levels. Although it remains uncertain when the COVID-19 pandemic will end, economic and social impacts on the region will be significant.

Pacific Urban Update 2020

All 14 Pacific Developing Member Countries (DMCs) are considered small island developing states (SIDS), of which seven demonstrate the effects of fragility (Table 1). Of the 14 Pacific DMCs, seven (the Cook Islands, Fiji, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, and Tuvalu) have over half of their population living in urban areas. Except for the Cook Islands and Samoa, urbanization rates are increasing in all Pacific DMCs.
