Role and Financing Opportunities of Energy Solutions in Selected Agriculture Value Chains

The specific objectives of the assignment were to conduct a desk study and consultations to prepare a long list of appropriate technologies in the value chains, use necessary selection criteria to identify the most relevant technologies through consultations and field visits, conduct indicative financial analysis of potential technologies (twelve), develop reference manuals for entrepreneurs, BFIs and service providers, validate the manuals and findings through workshop and finalize the materials.

World Environment Day

On March 15, China announced that it will host the global World Environment Day celebrations on 5 June 2019 with the theme of air pollution.

Approximately 7 million people worldwide die prematurely each year from air pollution, with about 4 million of these deaths occurring in Asia-Pacific. World Environment Day 2019 will urge governments, industry, communities, and individuals to come together to explore renewable energy and green technologies, and improve air quality in cities and regions across the world. 

Documenting the value of participation in Asia and the Pacific to achieve the environmental dimensions of the SDGs

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development recognizes the need for inclusive participation and effective stakeholder for the successful implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2019, the theme of the high-level political forum on sustainable development (HLPF) and of the 6th Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD) will be “Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”.

Asia LEDS Partnership Online Training Curricula

The curricula in this section were developed by the Asia LEDS Partnership in response to members’ requests to have access to current and concise guidance in one location for LEDS practitioners working in Asia. These curricula comprise a synthesis of freely available online materials from a wide range of source organizations, with attention given to selecting training resources that help to answer key questions on “how to” advance LEDS action in Asia.

The Role of Sustainability-oriented Social Enterprises in Boosting Green Livelihoods and Business Opportunities in Rural Contexts

The GREEN-WIN project reviewed various cases of capacity building and knowledge improvement of rural livelihood in rural communities related to sustainable and low-carbon solutions. The cases described below were carried out by the social enterprise Development Alternatives Group, comprised of the Society for Technology and Action for Rural Advancement (TARA), Society for Development Alternatives (DA), and their affiliates.

Over half of global land-based plastic waste leakage into the ocean originates in just five Asian countries. Yet, the
contribution of informal waste management to reducing pollution, remains largely overlooked. The United
Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is gathering evidence in pilot cities in
Asia to identify opportunities to return plastic resources into the production cycle by linking informal and formal
waste processes.

Energy Transition Pathways for the 2030 Agenda in Asia and the Pacific: Regional Trends Report on Energy for Sustainable Development 2018

The Asia-Pacific region’s rapid and sustained economic growth, increasing population, and rapid urbanization are driving growth in energy demand. Ensuring that supplies of energy are adequate to meet this growth in ways that are socially, economically and environmentally responsible creates a new set of challenges for policymakers. The transition to 2030 energy pathway, which is aimed at addressing those challenges, has four coherent and interlinked objectives – increased energy supply to meet growing demand, improved energy security, meeting the SDG7 targets and achieving the NDCs.
