SDG17 Partnerships for the Goals
This report analyses Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) trends as well as data availability for monitoring progress in Asia and the Pacific and its five subregions. It assesses progress towards the SDGs and the gaps which must be closed for these to be achieved by 2030. This assessment is designed to ensure the region’s actions remain on target, shortcomings are addressed as they arise, and all interested parties remain engaged.
Business as usual is not an option if the ambitions of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development are to be met. The scale and depth of the goals require a radically different and disruptive approach—the essence of innovation—along with significant scientific breakthroughs and technological advancements. Science, technology and innovation (STI) have the potential to increase the efficiency, effectiveness and impact of our efforts to meet the ambitions of the 2030 Agenda and create benefits for society, the economy and the environment.
Equality lies at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its ambition to leave no one behind. This report, prepared as the theme study for the 75th Commission Session, gages recent progress towards equality in three key outcomes: education, full-time employment and income.
Countries in the Asia-Pacific region face multiple energy-related challenges, which are driving them to transform their energy systems. First, there is a need to increase energy supply by some 60 per cent by 2035 to meet the growing demand associated with the rapid urbanization, industrialization and economic growth taking place. Second, achieving national energy security is required to protect economies from price fluctuations and market instability and to reduce dependence on imported energy.
The mission of Global Schools is simple; provide the necessary tools and resources for schools and teachers to educate their students on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In working with educators, the program aims to transform learning environments globally and make schools the hubs of education and leadership on the SDGs, ultimately empowering students to prioritize sustainable development in their lifestyles, behaviours, education and professional careers.
At UNESCO, we take this issue very seriously. With its World Network of Biosphere Reserves, as well as its capacities in the Natural Sciences, Education and Youth Mobilization, UNESCO is capable of playing a substantial role in addressing the problem. The Organization has a clear mandate in particular in the Natural Sciences, as well as in Education, with a view to the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.
The Global Schools Program
The Global Schools Program is an initiative led by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network - Youth Initiative (SDSN Youth) in support of UNESCO’s Global Action Program on Education for Sustainable Development (GAP-ESD).
Engaging Citizens for Sustainable Development: A Data Perspective – Making the Global Agenda the Citizens’ Agenda considers the case of the engagement of citizens and community-level actors within the United Nations sustainable development agenda, also known as the Global Agenda.
Five regional synthesis reports have been produced based on the National Situation Analyses on the scope, scale and contribution of volunteering to the SDGs in Asia Pacific, Africa, Europe, Arab States and Latin America and the Carribean. The findings and recommendations of the reports will be discussed during the regional consultations in the margins of the Annual regional fora on sustainable development. Online dialogues and fora will also provide wider stakeholders to participate and share their views.
