SDG15 Life on Land

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development recognizes the need for inclusive participation and effective stakeholder for the successful implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2019, the theme of the high-level political forum on sustainable development (HLPF) and of the 6th Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD) will be “Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”.

The fifth in the series of Inequality of Opportunity in Asia and the Pacific policy papers (following Education, Decent Work, Clean Energy and Children’s Nutrition) , this paper highlights why it is important to reduce inequalities in access to clean water and basic sanitation. It also introduces new ways of analyzing surveys to measure inequality of opportunity and to identify the shared circumstances of those “furthest behind” in 22 ESCAP member States.

Organisational Background

Since 1961, UNESCO Bangkok has had a dual role as both the Regional Bureau for Education and as a Cluster Office in Asia-Pacific.

As a Regional Bureau for Education, UNESCO Bangkok provides technical expertise and assistance and serves advisory, knowledge production and sharing, monitoring and evaluation functions to assist Asia-Pacific Member States and other UNESCO field offices and antenna office in the area of education.

This handbook aims to be a basic informative guide for national and municipal government officers and those who work with community learning centres (CLCs) and other community organizations. Its purpose is to develop stronger partnerships to enhance community-based Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

This course has been developed to support countries in the analysis and reporting for SDG Indicators 2.5.1 and 2.5.2. These indicators measure the achievement of SDG target 2.5, which focuses on maintaining genetic diversity of seeds, cultivated plants and farmed and domesticated animals and their related wild species. The course illustrates the fundamental concepts upon which the methodology is based.

From 23 to 28 October 2017, over 500 delegates from more than 120 countries gathered in Manila, Philippines, for the 12th Meeting of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), CMS COP12. The theme of the wildlife summit was ‘Their future is our future – sustainable development for wildlife and people’, highlighting the interlinkages between the protection of migratory species, and the economic and social wellbeing of people and the planet.

The “Implementing A ‘Ridge to Reef’ Approach to Protect Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functions in Tuvalu (R2R Tuvalu)” project aims to maintain and enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services, sustain livelihoods, and improve resilience.

ADB, in collaboration with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and UN Environment, held a Knowledge Sharing Workshop on Strengthening the Environment Dimensions of the SDGs in Asia and the Pacific on 21–22 February 2018, in Bangkok, Thailand.

This Compendium provides a review of available tools related to the integration of environment into policy and planning in order to deliver sustainable development in the Asia and Pacific region. In the context of this task, the term ‘tools’ is interpreted broadly in order to ensure that as wide a range of potential tools and processes as possible is considered that could be used to integrate the environmental considerations of sustainable development into the Policy Cycle.
