Sustainable, livable cities are the way forward for the future of Asia-Pacific. The 2030 Agenda implementation urges to advance urban SDG with other SDGs, related to resilience of water infrastructure to climate change.

ABSTRACT

Water (-Hazard) Resilient (Infrastructure for ) and Sustainable Cities are cities that achieve safe and adequate water supply and sanitation services based on sound water-related ecosystems, high level of water use efficiency, and a greater urban resilience to water-related disasters (here Water-Resilient Cities). The framework of Integrated Urban Water Management, follows Integrated Water Resource Management principles, adopts eco-city, compact city and smart growth concepts and approaches in urban planning. This is based on a long term strategic vision for sustainability, reinforced with innovative tools of measuring progress and appropriate scale of action at household, community and city level.

This interactive course assists regional policy makers and practitioners with a proactive policy measures to achieve SDG-readiness through lenses of Water-Resilient Cities, providing an environment with a sense of larger social well-being and happiness. Its structure follows key elements of the whole concept and lists its practical tools, viewing Water and Water Cycle at the core of Sustainable Development in an urban environment. The analysis of impacts of urbanization trends is being viewed through five key dimensions of urban water security. The framework, measuring progress of SDG-readiness is illustrated through best practices, policy briefs, holistic strategies and approaches of good urban governance.

The 5 thematic priorities to enable the dynamic policy shift, with challenges and respective policy toolkits, are focusing namely on: 1) drinking water and human well-being, 2) reclaiming water by using urban wastewater as a resource, 3) viewing water for economic activities and development, 4) restoring ecosystem functions, and 5) preparing for water-related hazards and effects of climate change. After taking Quiz and submitting a case study, participant will be awarded a Certificate of Completion of the e-Learning Course of ESCAP
