To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Earth Day movement and promote climate action in office environments, the United Nations are organizing a free webinar on practical steps to green workplace environments.

Building on the successful experience of the United Nations in greening their facilities and operations in Bangkok, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) will share best practices and provide guidance on how to get started on climate action in the workplace, and what main operational areas to target.

For UNDP, adaptation to climate change means climate-resilient economic development and sustainable livelihoods, especially for vulnerable populations – the poor, women, and indigenous peoples. As the Gobeshona 6 Conference came to end, the NAP Global Support Programme team had the unique opportunity to sit down with four conference participants from Bhutan, working in a variety of institutions from government, municipalities and university. It was fascinating to hear the commonalities in the interviewees’ answers and comments, providing the basis for sharing lessons and future collaboration.

Nepal is no stranger to the threats of nature. The impacts of the devastating earthquake in 2015 still ripple through the country today, as the 900,0000-some people who lost their homes continue to rebuild their lives. With the average global temperatures on an upward trajectory, other threats come sharply into focus. The Himalayas is home to a plethora of glaciers and frozen lakes, which are steadily melting due to climate change. It is estimated that a glacial lake outburst from Imja Lake alone could affect up to half a million people.

The World Social Report 2020 examines the impact of four such megatrends on inequality: technological innovation, climate change, urbanization and international migration. Technological change can be an engine of economic growth, offering new possibilities in health care, education, communication and productivity. But it can also exacerbate wage inequality and displace workers.

Published by WRI and UNDP, Enhancing NDCs: A Guide to Strengthening National Climate Plans is designed to help practitioners think through how to structure their country’s enhanced NDCs across three dimensions: strengthening targets to reduce emissions (mitigation), enhancing climate resilience (adaptation) and clearly communicating their actions to build trust and facilitate effective implementation.

The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 outlines seven clear targets and four priorities for action to prevent new and reduce existing disaster risks: (i) Understanding disaster risk; (ii) Strengthening disaster risk governance to manage disaster risk; (iii) Investing in disaster reduction for resilience and; (iv) Enhancing disaster preparedness for effective response, and to "Build Back Better" in recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction.
