The Out of School Youth Challenge

How might we build an enterprise model to support the educational needs of out-of-school youth?

Improving access to quality education remains as one of the Philippine government’s top priorities in 2019, as nine percent of Filipinos aged 6 to 24 years old are not in school, or almost 1 out of 10, totaling to an alarming figure of 3.6 million out-of-school children and youth in 2016. This contributes to the global problem, as there are over 265 million out-of-school children and youth in the world.

Lack of education hinders children and youth to access good livelihood opportunities, improve their quality of life, and reach their full potential. Unfortunately, many poor children in the Philippines leave school because of lack of financial capacity, and are ultimately not able to break this vicious cycle of poverty.

Submissions are open until April 05, 2019 for legal residents of the Philippines.

The Agriculture Challenge

How might we make the livelihood of upland farmers sustainable in the face of climate change effects on soil?

Agriculture is the basic food source of more than 100 million Filipinos. Aside from food, it also provides raw materials for industrialization and employment to a major portion of our labor force, especially in the rural areas. Despite its importance, the agriculture sector has been persistently criticized by its sluggish growth and insufficient ability to meet the domestic food demand of the growing population.

One of the contributing factors to the concurrent downturn of agricultural output in the country is climate change. It induces increases in temperatures, rainfall variation and frequency and intensity of extreme weather events adding to pressures on global and local food systems.

Submissions are open until April 05, 2019 for legal residents of the Philippines.
